Advent, December 17, 2020

I have been feeling down the last few days due to many things. I am wondering if any of you, who are reading, feel similarly? Covid and all that it entails is getting to me a bit. It’s amazing how hard it is to not talk about it. Have you noticed that? Sometimes when we are talking about it, one of us will say, “Covid Shmovid.” This is code for, “Let’s stop talking about it or we are talking about it again.” This ‘covid’ situation coupled with grieving and the normal struggles in life have left me feeling a bit blue which is why I haven’t written the last couple of days. But, the Lord says to come to Him and find rest as well as to stay my mind on Him and find peace.

Matthew 11:28 says, “Come to Me (JESUS), all who labor and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest.”

Isaiah 26:3-4 says, “You keep him in perfect peace whose mind is stayed on you, because he trusts in you. Trust in the Lord forever, for the Lord God is an everlasting rock.”

So, by His grace, I ran to Him afresh today and set my mind on who He is and who I am in Him and guess what? I feel at peace, once again. With that, let’s look at the attributes of who God is in Christ and who we are in Christ as it pertains to Advent and the Messiah Vine made by Kathi Westlund.

December 15 – New Covenant

Who is God in the person of Christ? He is the Mediator of the New Covenant.

Hebrews 8:6-7 Christ has obtained a ministry that is as much more excellent than the old as the covenant He mediates is better, since it is enacted on better promises. For if that first covenant had been faultless, there would have been no occasion to look for a second.

Who are we in Him? We are His.

Jeremiah 31:31-34 “Behold, the days are coming, declares the Lord, when I will make a new covenant with the house of Israel and the house of Judah, not like the covenant that I made with their fathers on the day when I took them by the hand to bring them out of the land of Egypt, my covenant that they broke, though I was their husband, declares the Lord.  For this is the covenant that I will make with the house of Israel after those days, declares the Lord: I will put my law within them, and I will write it on their hearts. And I will be their God, and they shall be my people.  And no longer shall each one teach his neighbor and each his brother, saying, ‘Know the Lord,’ for they shall all know me, from the least of them to the greatest, declares the Lord. For I will forgive their iniquity, and I will remember their sin no more.”

December 16- Daniel

You can read the account of Daniel in the Lion’s Den in Daniel 6 where the Lord rescues Daniel from getting eaten by hungry lions. When Cyrus, the king of Persia, witnessed this he ordered that all in his kingdom worship the one true God and he said, “For He is the living God and He endures forever; His kingdom will not be destroyed, His dominion will never end. He rescues and He saves; He performs signs and wonders in the heavens and on the earth. He has rescued Daniel from the power of the lions.”

Who is God in the person of Jesus in this account? He is Our Rescue.

2 Timothy 4:18 The Lord will rescue me from every evil deed and bring me safely into his heavenly kingdom. To him be the glory forever and ever. Amen.

Who are we in Him? We are Rescued.

John 3:16-17 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.

Colossians 1:13-14 He has rescued us from the domain of darkness and transferred us to the kingdom of his beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.

December 17 – Nehemiah

Look at the picture above and read the scriptures listed to understand the account of Nehemiah. Nehemiah was used by the Lord to rebuild the temple. Nehemiah was a man of prayer and you can read his whole prayer in Nehemiah 1:4-11, but verse 11 says, “O Lord, let Your ear be attentive to the prayer of your servant, and to the prayer of Your servants who delight to fear Your name, and give success to Your servant today, and grant him mercy in the sight of this man.” Now I was cupbearer to the king. After this, Nehemiah approached the king asking him for permission to rebuild the temple for the Jewish people and the king agreed.

Who is God in the person of Christ in this account? He is the Cornerstone.

Who are you in Him? You are Living Stones; Members of His Household.

1 Peter 2: 4-6 As you come to Him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture:

“Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone,
    a cornerstone chosen and precious,
and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.” (Isaiah 28:16)

Ephesians 2: 19-22 You are no longer strangers and aliens, but you are fellow citizens with the saints and members of the household of God, built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, Christ Jesus himself being the cornerstone, in whom the whole structure, being joined together, grows into a holy temple in the Lord.  In him you also are being built together into a dwellingplace for God by the Spirit.

Coming to the Lord and setting my mind on who He is and who I am in Him today brought me out of my blueness. I hope it helped you too.

Blessings to you,

Heather
