Advent 2020 – December 6 – Jacob

In the account of creation, we see Jesus as the Creator and in Him, we are a New Creation.

In the account of Adam and Eve, we see Jesus as the Sinless Savior and in Him, we are Saved Sinners.

In the account of Noah, we see Jesus as the Way of Salvation and in Him, we are Saved from the Wrath to Come.

In the account of Abraham, we see Jesus as the Fulfillment of Promise and in Him, we are the Blessed Heirs of Promise.

In the account of Isaac, we see Jesus as the Ransom; Lamb of God and in Him, we are Ransomed.

Today we come to the account of Jacob in Genesis 22. Abraham and Sarah had Isaac. Isaac and Rebekah had Esau and Jacob (twins). Jacob was the son of promise; the one who received the same blessing that was given to his father and grandfather; the one that God named Israel thus becoming the father of the Israelites.

And Jacob came to a certain place and stayed there that night, because the sun had set. Taking one of the stones of the place, he put it under his head and lay down in that place to sleep.  And he dreamed, and behold, there was a ladder set up on the earth, and the top of it reached to heaven. And behold, the angels of God were ascending and descending on it!  And behold, the Lord stood above it and said, “I am the Lord, the God of Abraham your father and the God of Isaac. The land on which you lie I will give to you and to your offspring.  Your offspring shall be like the dust of the earth, and you shall spread abroad to the west and to the east and to the north and to the south, and in you and your offspring shall all the families of the earth be blessed.  (Genesis 22:11-14)

God appeared to Jacob again, when he came from Paddan-aram, and blessed him.  And God said to him, “Your name is Jacob; no longer shall your name be called Jacob, but Israel shall be your name.” So he called his name Israel. (Genesis 35:9-10).

Who is God in the person of Jesus? He is the Ladder; the Bridge Between God and Man; the Mediator

Jesus said to Nathanael, “Truly, truly, I say to you, you will see heaven opened, and the angels of God ascending and descending on the Son of Man.”

Jesus said, “I am the way, and the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.” John 14:6

For there is one God, and there is one Mediator between God and men, the man Christ Jesus, who gave Himself as a ransom for all (I Timothy 2:5-6)

Who are we in Him? We are the recipients of grace gaining access to the Father through Jesus.

For through Jesus we both have access in one Spirit to the Father (Ephesians 2:18)
