In Christ, You are the Salt of the Earth

Salt is beautiful.  It’s translucent and shaped like a perfect cube; truly a masterpiece from the Lord.

Salt has many uses.

Salt preserves food.  Have you ever had a pickle or beef jerky?  Salt is what is used to preserve those foods. Do you remember Ma Ingalls from Little House on the Prairie salting beef, pork, bear, and deer?  She did that so her family had food to eat in the winter.

Salt prevents bacteria from growing.  What do you do when you have a sore throat? Gargle with salt water.  The salt kills the bacteria.  When we lived on Guam, a favorite dish among the local people was called Chicken Kelaguen.  The chicken was marinated in salt and lemon which kind of ‘cooked’ the chicken while killing the bacteria.  It was delicious.  I also remember my grandparents eating raw ground beef.  YUCK!! It was not delicious, however it was bathed in salt which killed the bacteria.

Salt is a natural cleanser. Check out https://www.foodmatters.com/article/37-smart-uses-of-salt-for-non-toxic-cleaning-purposes I am going to have to try a few of those.

Salt tastes good and makes everything else taste good by blocking the bitter and bringing out the sweet.  If you make chocolate chip cookies and miss putting in the salt, they taste awful.  Sweet things need a little salt to make them sweeter.

Salt causes thirst.  When we eat something salty, we want something to drink.

The Bible compares us, in Christ, to salt.

Matthew 5:13 “You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet.”

We are to be salty people who preserve the word of the Lord, who fight against sin and keep it from growing, who help cleanse the world of sin by sharing to gospel, who make the world ‘taste’ better, and who cause others to thirst for the Living Water; Jesus Christ.

To close, I will review where we have been the last few posts in response to all that is going on in the world.

Fear not!

Remain Humble!

Pray & Seek the Lord!

Turn From Sin!

Know the Signs of the Times and Be Found Ready!

Trust that the Lord is Preparing a Place for You!

Be a Salty Person!

Here is a wonderful description of a salty person from Romans 12:9-21 “Let love be genuine. Abhor what is evil; hold fast to what is good. Love one another with brotherly affection. Outdo one another in showing honor. Do not be slothful in zeal, be fervent in spirit, serve the Lord. Rejoice in hope, be patient in tribulation, be constant in prayer. Contribute to the needs of the saints and seek to show hospitality. Bless those who persecute you; bless and do not curse them. Rejoice with those who rejoice, weep with those who weep. Live in harmony with one another. Do not be haughty, but associate with the lowly. Never be wise in your own sight. Repay no one evil for evil, but give thought to do what is honorable in the sight of all. If possible, so far as it depends on you, live peaceably with all. Beloved, never avenge yourselves, but leave it to the wrath of God, for it is written, “Vengeance is mine, I will repay, says the Lord.” To the contrary, “if your enemy is hungry, feed him; if he is thirsty, give him something to drink; for by so doing you will heap burning coals on his head.” Do not be overcome by evil, but overcome evil with good.”

This description finds its perfect home in the person of Jesus, however we are, in Christ, to be reflections of Him to this broken world so, may you be salty!

Blessings to you,

Heather
