He is a Friend and you, in Him, are too.

How to Put Together a Prayer Pack – Pocket 3

Pocket 3: Your Spouse

Paul and I met in high school in 1987. We dated 5 years and were married July 11, 1992.  We have been married almost 28 years. The Lord has been gracious in giving us five children, one son-in-law, and two grandsons.  Our marriage has been tested time and again due to both of our imperfections, but one thing has remained; we are friends and Paul is my dearest friend this side of heaven.  The Song of Solomon is all about the love between and husband and wife.  One of my favorite sections is from chapter 5:10-16 and it is titled ‘The Bride Praises Her Husband.’

My beloved is radiant and ruddy, distinguished among ten thousand. His head is the finest gold; his locks are wavy, black as a raven. His eyes are like doves beside streams of water, bathed in milk, sitting beside a full pool. His cheeks are like beds of spices, mounds of sweet-smelling herbs. His lips are lilies, dripping liquid myrrh. His arms are rods of gold, set with jewels. His body is polished ivory, bedecked with sapphires. His legs are alabaster columns, set on bases of gold. His appearance is like Lebanon, choice as the cedars. His mouth is most sweet, and he is altogether desirable. This is my beloved and this is my FRIEND.

I love to pray for this precious friend, my husband.  For many years I have prayed specific character traits over Paul and have taken these from a book written by Stormie Omartian called “The Power of a Praying Wife.”

Along with praying a specific character trait over Paul, I also have a 3 x 5 card in pocket 3 that have specific prayer requests that I am praying for Paul.  Some of these he has asked me to pray and some I am just praying. It is such a privilege to pray for this man that God has given to me; it’s one sweet way that I am able to love him. As the Lord loves me, I am better equipped to love Paul.  As the Lord is my friend, I am better equipped to be Paul’s friend.

John 15:12-15 “This is My commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are My friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from My Father I have made known to you.

Here is the hymn “What a Friend we have in Jesus” by Steven Curtis Chapman.

Here are the songs “Faithful Friend” by Twila Paris and Steven Curtis Chapman and “Jesus is My Best Friend” by Twila Paris.

Blessings to you as you pray for your spouse!

If you are a husband reading this, please pray for your wife and let her know that you are.  It’s one of the sweetest ways that you can love her.
