Yesterday, I received a phone call from my dad’s nurse who said that they have an active case of the COVID-19 virus in his group home. After I got off the phone with his nurse, a momentary fear came over me. This morning I was holding my newest grandson, Caleb Emmanuel. He is so squishy and cuddly. As I was holding him, I was thinking about some of the headlines over the past few days and a momentary fear came over me again. This situation in the world is so hard. I am wondering how many of you have had fear grip you like it has me at times during this trial? Where do you go when fear grips you? I pray that you go to the Word. His word says over and over to not be afraid and to not fear. The Lord knows that there have always been things to cause fear. He knows that this virus situation causes fear. But, He does not want us to fear because He is with us. With that, let’s turn our attention, once again, to who God is and who you are in Him.
Who is God? He is the QUELLER of fear.
What does this mean? The definition of quell means to suppress, extinguish, or quiet, so God quells our fears, He is the QUELLER.
Who are you in Him? We are Comforted.
When we look to Him and fix our eyes on Jesus, we are comforted because He is with us.
Here are some verses that support this:
Joshua 1:9
“Have I not commanded you? Be strong and courageous. DO NOT BE FRIGHTENED, and do not be dismayed, for the LORD YOUR GOD WILL BE WITH YOU WHEREVER YOU GO.”
Isaiah 43:1-3
“FEAR NOT, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name, you are mine. When you pass through the waters, I WILL BE WITH YOU; and through the rivers, they shall not overwhelm you; when you walk through fire you shall not be burned, and the flame shall not consume you. For I am the LORD your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior.”
Psalm 23:4
Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I WILL FEAR NO EVIL, for YOUR ARE WITH ME; your rod and your staff, they COMFORT me.
Isaiah 41:13
For I, the LORD your God, HOLD YOUR RIGHT HAND; it is I who say to you, “FEAR NOT, I am the one who helps you.”
Psalm 56:3
When I am afraid, I put my trust in You.
Hebrews 12:1-2 encourages us by saying, “Therefore, since we are surrounded by so great a cloud of witnesses, let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith, who for the joy that was set before him endured the cross, despising the shame, and is seated at the right hand of the throne of God.”
In Christ, we all have those who have gone before us surrounding and encouraging us. Like these verses mention, there is a tangible weight in this world and I know in our household, sin is clinging closely. I see it in myself and I see it my family. Those that have gone before us have finished their race and so they are encouraging us to run with endurance through these difficult miles of our race to the finish line. By keeping our eyes fixed firmly on Christ and remembering what He did for us, we can run these difficult miles with Him, the author and perfecter of our faith and we are promised that we will make it. These truths from Him QEULL of fear. This is good news.
I will post the songs “Do Not Fear” by Seeds Family Worship and “Isaiah 43:1-3” by Esther Mui, and “Turn Your Eyes Upon Jesus” by Lauren Daigle.
