God is Incomprehensible and You are Known

I met my husband Paul in 1987 when I was 18 and he was 16. We were just babies:) We married 5 1/2 years later on July 11, 1992 and to date have been married 27 1/2  years.  He is my dearest friend this side of heaven.  Now, you would think that I would know just about everything there is to know about Paul but I don’t.  I am learning new things about him all the time.  For example, a couple of weeks ago I was feeling overwhelmed by many things.  I told Paul that I was feeling busy in my heart and asked him to pray for me, which he did.  Then I left with my girls to go to piano and start a very busy Monday.  When we returned home, I ran upstairs to quickly to fold and put away about three loads of laundry.  To my surprise, it was all folded and put away.  I asked the girls if they did it and they hadn’t.  I called for my son James, who doesn’t even live at home anymore to see if he did it.  Then I asked Paul and he said that he did.  I could not believe it. I didn’t know that he could fold laundry.  It blessed the socks off of me.  Of course, this is a silly example but it demonstrates how will I never know everything about this man that the Lord has given me.  I know a lot about him, but not everything.  How much more with the Lord?

Who is God? God is INCOMPREHENSIBLE.

We can know God personally and have much knowledge about Him, but not fully, not exhaustively.  He truly is more than we can fully understand. The following verses show this:

Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable. Psalm 145:3

For My thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways My ways, declares the Lord. For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways and My thoughts than your thoughts. Isaiah 55:8-9

Oh, the depth of the riches and wisdom and knowledge of God! How unsearchable are his judgments and how inscrutable his ways! “For who has known the mind of the Lord, or who has been his counselor?” Romans 11:33-34

Erik Thoennes, professor and department chair of biblical and theological studies at Biola University and a pastor at Grace Evangelical Free Church in La Mirada, California writes, “These verses teach that not only is God’s whole being incomprehensible but each of his attributes—his greatness, power, thoughts, ways, wisdom, and judgments—are well beyond human ability to fathom fully. Not only can we never know everything there is to know about God, we can never know everything there is to know about even one aspect of God’s character or work.”

Who are you in Him? You are Known.

Even though we cannot know everything there is to know about Him, He knows us fully; everything thing we are doing, what we are thinking, every word we say. Psalm 139:1-6 says,

“O Lord, you have searched me and known me!

You know when I sit down and when I rise up;

    you discern my thoughts from afar.

You search out my path and my lying down

    and are acquainted with all my ways.

Even before a word is on my tongue,

    behold, O Lord, you know it altogether.

You hem me in, behind and before,

    and lay your hand upon me.

Such knowledge is too wonderful for me;

    it is high; I cannot attain it.”

So, how should we respond to the fact that God is INCOMPREHENSIBLE but that He knows everything about us?  Erik Thoennes says it like this, “Because of his gracious revelation and illumination, God can indeed be known. God’s knowability should lead to eager, diligent, devoted study of God’s Word so that we can understand him as he has revealed himself and avoid any false view of God that will dishonor him. We should never grow apathetic in seeking to know God because we are in fact able and equipped to know him and to please him with our lives.” So, let’s keep pressing in together learning more about who God is and who we are in Him.

Blessings to you.

When You Pray….. Take time to praise the Lord that He knows you inside and out.  Pray for your spouse and children.  It is the 5th Sunday of the month so pray for your elected leaders from the federal government to your own city government.  These men and women need wisdom as they navigate through these days.
